PEX press uses a mechanical tool to connect PEX tubing to a compatible fitting.

What is cold expansion PEX?
Cold expansion uses the shape-memory characteristics of approved PEX tubing.

- Cut the tubing square.
- Position the expansion ring.
- Expand the tubing and ring with the approved tool.
- Insert the fitting before the tubing contracts.
- Allow the tubing and ring to return around the fitting.
Which method is faster?
PEX press may reduce installation variables because the connection is complete after the approved press cycle. Cold expansion requires the tubing and ring to contract around the fitting before the connection is complete.
Tubing size affects the two methods differently. A PEX press connection takes about the same time to complete at any diameter. For example a ½-inch joint takes about as long to press as a 2-inch joint. Cold expansion can take longer on larger diameters, because the tool needs several expansion cycles to fully expand bigger tubing. Installation time still varies with access, jobsite conditions, crew training and system requirements.
Can the connection be tested immediately?
A PEX press connection may be ready for pressure testing after the approved press cycle. Follow the manufacturer’s requirements for test timing, pressure, medium and duration.
Cold-expansion connections may require additional contraction time. Lower temperatures can extend that period up to 24 hours.

How does temperature affect PEX installation?

In colder conditions, expanded PEX tubing contracts more slowly. Crews may need to wait longer before a cold-expansion connection is ready to pressure test, up to 24 hours in low temperatures.
In hotter conditions, the tubing contracts more quickly after expansion. Installers may need additional expansion cycles to keep the tubing and ring open long enough to fully insert the fitting before it begins to contract.
PEX press does not rely on contraction to form the connection, so it is not affected by temperature. A PEX press connection can be pressure tested immediately after the press cycle, regardless of the outdoor air temperature.

When comparing cost, consider:
